No matter how you got here, congrats! You\u2019re the boss. But you&#8217;ve probably already realized, wearing the boss&#8217;s shoes isn&#8217;t always all it&#8217;s cracked up to be!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><span class=\"default_cursor_cs\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being the boss is more than, well, bossing others around. To successfully manage an organization, you\u2019ll need to take a closer look at yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few tips from our career experts on <strong class=\"default_cursor_cs\">how to be a better boss<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><b>Focus on the Positives:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><span class=\"default_cursor_cs\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most employees tend to react best to positive reinforcement\u2014so focus on that, rather than nitpicking every little thing they do that\u2019s less than perfect. No one likes a micromanager. Instead of focusing on mistakes, notice the good that your team members do\u2014and praise them for it. This type of environment really boosts morale. Not to say you shouldn\u2019t correct wrongdoing\u2014but focus on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constructive <\/span><\/i><span class=\"default_cursor_cs\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Identify Your Own Weaknesses:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"default_cursor_cs\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A successful leader is able to identify\u2014and rectify\u2014his or her own weaknesses. Nothing will inspire and motivate your team more than seeing you owning up to and working to correct your shortcomings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Be Yourself: <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"default_cursor_cs\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you spend time with your employees\u2014whether at work or outside of it\u2014you should be yourself. If you\u2019re not authentic, they\u2019ll know. If you\u2019re yourself, they\u2019ll respect you more and be more likely to buy into the organizational culture you\u2019ve created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t Order\u2014Lead:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\"><span class=\"default_cursor_cs\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone who\u2019s just the boss often inspires very little in their employees\u2014except perhaps fear of losing their job. They\u2019ll only do the bare minimum required of them to stay employed. But a true leader\u2014someone who inspires their employees to contribute to the culture and truly be a part of the organization\u2014will inspire their team to go above and beyond and reach their full potential. Be a leader, not just a boss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hire the Best\u2014and Treat Them with Respect:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"default_cursor_cs\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the best boss can\u2019t be successful without a great team. Make sure your hires not only have the skills and experience you\u2019re looking for, but goals and values that align with those of the organization. And don\u2019t forget to treat every employee at every level of the company as a colleague.
