So many factors affect the job market: generational demographics, laws\/regulations, politics, interest rates, inflation, supply and demand, unemployment levels, automation,&nbsp; and \u2013 something that we did not predict \u2013 the COVID pandemic, which left an indelible mark on the job market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Most of us have no control over these macro-economic factors. In my experience, though, hindsight is 20\/20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\"><strong>So, what can we do to protect our livelihood? <\/strong>Plenty!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Here are a few that I think are important, whether you are very early in your career or you have been working for many years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Understand Change <em>Will<\/em> Happen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Understand and accept that change will happen.&nbsp; It\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing. It\u2019s how we progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Very few people are performing the same job, in the same way, as when they started working.&nbsp; Think about the future and how it might impact you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Learn as Much as You Can<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">The more you learn and the more you\u2019re exposed to, the more valuable you will be. You don\u2019t necessarily have to go back to school&#8230;just keep learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Keep reading.&nbsp; Keep talking to other people in your company, in your industry, and in your networks. Be on the lookout for ways that you can increase your knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Build a Network<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Speaking of networks \u2013 this is something that can be a regular part of your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Networks are not something you turn on when you need to find a job or are seeking support. Solid networks start by connecting with friends, neighbors, and colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Stay in touch with people. Help out when you can. Sometimes, just lending an ear or sharing a cup of coffee once in a while is all it takes to build wonderful connections with people that you may be able to reach out to for support when needed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Know Your Value Proposition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Do you \u201cbring it\u201d every day?&nbsp; What is your employer getting in return for what they pay you?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">It might sound strange, but this is a great mental exercise to make sure you feel like you are consistently working on the \u201chighest and best\u201d use of your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">We all get sidetracked and lose focus \u2013 it happens. Ask yourself periodically if <strong>you<\/strong> would hire \u201c<strong>you<\/strong>\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Have a Plan B<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">What would happen if you got laid off next week?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">Build up some savings.
